How to pick the right game for your commute

June 17, 2026 · Markus Lindqvist

Not every great game is a great commute game. The perfect title for a quiet evening at home can be a stressful mess on a swaying train. Over time I've learned to match the genre to the situation. For short, interrupted moments, arcade and puzzle games win easily. You can start and stop instantly, nothing bad happens if you get pulled away, and they play with one hand. This is prime Big Rush Cast or Garden of Glass territory. For a longer, seated commute where you can focus, RPGs and adventures shine. They reward attention and let you sink into a story. Just make sure they save well, because your stop always arrives at the worst moment. Racing and action games are the tricky middle. They're fun but demand focus and eat battery, so I save them for when I know I've got both a signal-free window and a charge to spare. The simplest tip: keep two or three games installed for different moods. One quick arcade thing, one thinker, one story. That way whatever your day throws at you, there's a game that fits.
